A super surprise from the Beastie Boys

Beastie Boys have contributed a "super surprise" 12-inch record for Record Store Day, which is a day in which special vinyl and CD releases are sold exclusively at independently owned record stores. The purpose of Record Store Day is to encourage music fans to support their local record stores, instead of big box stores or online music stores.

The Beastie Boys's super surprise record for Record Store Day is limited to 1,000 copies and will be distributed among more than 700 record stores. If you are interested in getting a copy of the Beastie Boys's album, go to your local record store and express interest in it. The record store will not be able to guarantee you a copy, but it will be able to make a request for the record.

I checked with Other Music, a popular independent record store in NYC, and was told that the store requested 14 copies of the Beastie Boys's album, but it has no idea how many it will actually get. It's all a crapshoot — for both the record stores and buyers.

A source at Capitol/EMI, the Beastie Boys's record label, confirmed that the label did not commission the album from the Beastie Boys — meaning, the idea to participate in Record Store Day was solely the Beastie Boys's idea. Knowing that the label was not involved in the album means the album could be anything. Because it's the Beastie Boys, you have to assume that it will be interesting.

A list of the special releases for Record Store Day can be viewed HERE. Record Store Day takes place on April 17.

If I had a record player I'd try to get it, but I don't so I won't. :(

Me too Saber! If you are ahead of me in line IT'S ON!

Hey Penny you should still try to get one for the uniqueness. Once it's out people will convert the audio to digital so everyone can enjoy.

An interesting idea, not feeling too confident about being one of the lucky recipients though !

Probably will be an album of remixes (YAWN). It's not going to be new songs because they already did that with the remastered Paul's Boutique bonus album. They're not going to repeat themselves.

Put money on it being instrumental music

i'm not holding my breath....the Beasties haven't issued a COOL vinyl release since the Aglio 7"s w/ Light my fire & soba violence.
if anything; it will be some b-side on par with netty's girl (i.e. an album you don't play to convince your friends the beasties are good)

Maybe it will be the new album before they go back and tweak it prior to releasing it in the fall.

I am positive it will not be "Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 1." A band signed to a label cannot publicly leak its own album.

I'm going to boldly guess that it'll be "The Mix-Up" remixed. Many of the artists whom the Beastie Boys approached to remix the songs did actually submit their remixes to them. In a March 2008 interview, Yauch and Horovitz said that Jarvis Cocker and Snoop Dogg had both turned in spoken words for the album, and M.I.A. had submitted a song. Beastie Boys had the goods to make such an album. Diamond and Horovitz could easily have finalized the album without Yauch's involvement.

Good thinking Hot Sauce, that seems like a reasonable possibility. Who knows, maybe it's the legendary unreleased Def Jam LP ! ;) Seriously though, I guess it could contain some live material.

I read that the Beastie Boys Record Store Day album may be the mashups of HSC songs by DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist from DJ Hero. No source was provided, so it could just be someone's guess.

Got to my local shop before it opened, queued for 45 minutes only to find they didn't have it.
